I come by my depression honestly. I don’t have to “make myself depressed”. My mom was hospitalized for depression in 1958, and must have become pregnant almost the day she was released. (There is a big gap between my older brother and me.) She had to stop her experimental psychiatric drugs (probably just Valium or something) when she realized she was pregnant. So there is a genetic component, and a traumatic life experience as a teen that gave me PTSD. I always found marijuana and hashish were good tonics for the depressive downward spiral, as well as a stimulant for the imagination.
I cannot remember a time when I wasn’t drawing or colouring back into my earliest childhood. Was super shy, so a lovely way to spend time alone, and also a great way to express yourself, happy or sad.
